“We live in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne where I run a landscaping business, but I was a chef by trade. I always enjoyed cooking growing up, and home economics at school, so I took my passion into cooking. I did my apprenticeship at a restaurant called Clover Cottage in the south-east suburbs of Melbourne, then ventured into a couple of pubs and then eventually into a restaurant of my own where I was head chef. It was all great and challenging but it didn’t work for young family life — late hours, long hours. So I bought a lawnmowing business, after being a chef for 12 years, and then from that lawnmowing business it’s now a full-blown landscape, construction and maintenance business. I’ve got a couple of designers I work with who will design the gardens and then we’ll go in and bring it to life.”

“My daughter Lily is going to follow me into the trade sector; she’s looking at doing electrical. I think one thing kids learn growing up being around someone with their own business is work is very important. Lily has three younger siblings and they come to work with us; I’ve had them mowing lawns, I’ve had them laying turf. They know what work ethic is and they learn those fundamentals of life of helping someone else. The family that work together, have fun together, stay together. The biggest thing I used to like about cooking was pleasing people, and I’ve taken that fundamental basic into landscaping. And I was always taught from my boss originally, it doesn’t matter what you do, do the best you can.”
