Mark Currie started out as a builder but his career — and life — took a turn following a car accident. “I was in a car accident and ended up with breaks in every part of my body. As a result, I ended up going into the corporate world,” he explains. Mark has since returned to the construction game, and for the past four years has operated Mark & Co, handling restorations, renovations, and construction jobs both commercial and domestic.
“Believe it or not, I ended up doing an accounting degree and an IT degree. I think the thing that aligns with accounting, IT work and building is just being logical and thinking about things logically. Accounting and software programming are all about logic, as is construction. The difference is you get to meet a lot more people while out building,” Mark says.
Mark is currently restoring a 120-year-old front verandah in Rutherglen that’s eight-metres high. “I guess for me, I like to do the alterations; I like the different types of challenges with it. It’s difficult and it’s challenging but the end result is going to look magnificent.”
And Mark is not averse to trends and fashion; some he likes and some he does not. “I look at some houses and think ‘how are you going to update that without demolishing it?’ But fashion is fashion, it just keeps changing,” he admits. “What I’ve found with this old house, for example, is that it was made out of hardwood and floorboards and pressed metal. Those materials obviously deteriorate and are replaced with newer materials, like cement sheeting, that look very similar but last much longer. I think that’s a good thing.”
Away from the job site, Mark is your typical husband and father. “I like my bourbon and I like my Coke. And I love my food. I looove my food! Sometimes I like it simple with steak and chips, and other times I go somewhere like Thai Puka in Albury — oh my god, their curries are beautiful! I don’t like ‘hot’ but I like trying new things, and my son is always pushing me to see how ‘hot’ we can go.”
