Marta and Ali, FlourBomb Cafe & Bakehouse

Since 2021, FlourBomb Cafe & Bakehouse has been providing Carlton locals with great food, coffee and customer service.

At the helm of FlourBomb are Ali and Marta, a Lebanese-Polish combo who’ve combined his baking prowess with her financial know-how to bring big flavours and friendly service to this part of Sydney.

“Ali used to have a bakery in Banksia, then he had quite a long break outside of the food industry. I come from a different background as well, bookkeeping and accounting, but I always had a love for food,” Marta explains. “It was something we always wanted to do [together] and when the right time came, we just did it!”

The rest, as they say, is history. Although FlourBomb is very much of the now. “We concentrate on Lebanese food, modernised, I would say, with an Australian influence,” Marta says, noting that ingredients such as mint and yoghurt will often find their way on to a wrap or roll.

The menu boasts hamburgers (beef and chicken as well as a breakfast variety), schnitzels, both traditional and Lebanese pizzas, wraps, including shawarma, pides, salads, and shish plates. “I would say the peri peri chicken wrap and pizza are very, very popular; so too the garlic prawn pizza and the Lebanese pizza. Meat and cheese — nothing beats that!”

And with winter now upon us, Marta says they’ll be introducing soups to the already impressive menu that has something for everyone. “Fresh dough, fresh ingredients — you can’t go wrong! Everyone can find something to suit their taste, because not everyone likes pickles and not everyone likes tabouli, but you will find something on that menu that you like. Everyone will be content.”

That includes the coffee lovers; FlourBomb serves Artis Coffee, a woodfire roasted blend that Marta, no stranger to 12-hour shifts, swears by. “I drink a coffee in the morning that my husband makes for me and then probably I’ll have one in the afternoon.” They also serve a selection of teas, fresh juices and smoothies.
