Philip Barbaro, Avenue on Chifley

Avenue on Chifley sits in the heart of Sydney’s CBD at Chifley Square, but at its core it remains unmistakably personal. Philip Barbaro runs the business alongside his two brothers, Stephen and Anthony — a family dynamic that is equal parts competitive and deeply connected.

“It’s always interesting around the family table — we all think we’re better chefs than each other,” he laughs. “We’re Italian, so we’re passionate. Everyone has their own idea of the perfect version of a dish.”

That shared intensity has shaped the Avenue brand, which now extends beyond Chifley to Avenue on George and Avenue on Sussex. What began 20 years ago as a simple coffee shop has evolved into a layered hospitality space that moves with the rhythm of the city. “When I opened, it was just coffee,” Philip says. “Now you can start your morning here, stay for lunch, meet friends in the afternoon or wind down with a drink in the evening. The business has grown up with Sydney.”

Yet growth has never meant chasing trends. Avenue’s foundation lies in familiarity. “We’re not chasing social media numbers,” Philip explains. “We’re building relationships. We had a group of eight in yesterday who come every month without fail. Some of our regulars visit two or three times a day.” For him, hospitality is about how a place feels as much as how it tastes. “The product matters — the flavours matter — but what brings people back is the experience.”

Even with construction reshaping the surrounds of Chifley Square, Avenue has maintained its calm presence. Philip redesigned the space to feel like a downtown New York escape — somewhere that softens the edges of the city outside. “There’s a lot happening around us,” he says. “But once you step inside, it feels removed.”

After two decades, Avenue isn’t just part of the CBD’s daily rhythm — it’s woven into it. A place where morning coffees become ritual, where guests are greeted by name, and where family pride runs through the entire team. From manager Bill and supervisor Andrew on the floor, to head chef Nicko in the kitchen and head barista Anne behind the machine, that care is felt in every plate, every cocktail and every coffee that leaves the pass.
