With more than 45 years’ experience in the automotive industry, Tony Tannous knows his cars. And he’ll know exactly what your car will need should you bring it to him and the team at TAG Automotive. “In my work, I understand every vehicle. Every vehicle, every truck — whatever! Some people specialise in European cars or BMWs but they can’t do Holdens or Fords; they can’t do Mitsibishis or Toyotas,” Tony says matter-of-factly and with no hint of hubris. “All motors are based on the same principle, whether combustion, injection, or two-stroke,” Tony says. “From Toyota all the way to Ford, all the way down to Mitsibishi, down to the old Buicks, everything in the motor has been changed and enhanced but combustion is still the same.” Speaking of change, Tony notes the increase in the popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles. And yes, he can work on those too. “I love my job and I love what I’m doing. It’s a challenging job and a very interesting one.”

“I always wanted to be a mechanic from the time I left school. I like the satisfaction that comes with making people happy when their car is fully complete; they come in with a problem that no one else could fix and we fix it. The customers are happy and we’re happy to see their smiling faces and return business. We have had to upgrade our technology and our studies to work on the newer cars that are out now, but they’re all pretty much the same basic system; once you know the basic system, how it works, you’re pretty much right. There’s just a lot more testing to run on the newer vehicles. If you drive a car from the ’80s, for example, if you break down you can probably pull over and fix it. These days, if you break down you’ve got to tow it; it’s unlikely you’re going to fix it on the side of the road. Personally, I’ve always liked the Ford GTs, the ’71 model. And without hubcaps!
